Frequently Asked Questions

1. If I want to use SmartyCam sometime in standalone and sometime in slave, which SmartyCam and addition cable do I have to order?

SmartyCam is the same in both installation. You can use it in stand alone and in slave without any change.
The cables can be different: to connect it to an AIM Logger, you have to order the CAN connection cable, while for a stand alone installation - in case you need the external power - you have to order the Power cable.

2. What type of mounting is available for SmartyCam? Roll-bar mount, windscreen mount?

See accessories.

3. Will SmartyCam function as datalogger?

SmartyCam is not a logger. AIM is studying the possibility of recording data in the internal SD Card, but currently data logging is only available by connection to a separate AIM logger such as MXL or Evo.

4. Can I view SmartyCam videos in Race Studio?

AIM is developing the software for offering this feature. Currently it is not possible.

5. Is a zoom function available?

Yes, with 2x multiplicative factor.

6. The recording process started when I switched the engine on, even if "Auto Rec" function was disabled. Why?

This happens when SmartyCam is used in slave mode because in this situation it receives an RPM input. "Auto Rec" function can be disabled just depending on acceleration, not on RPM: so, when the engine switches on, the recording process starts automatically.

7. What is the recommended video file download process: using SmartyManager software or copying files directly from microSD to the PC?

It is much more rapid to copy video files directly from microSD.

8. The newest SmartyCam are supplied with a 4GB class 2 microSD card: I read in documentation to avoid the class 2 cards. Is this advice no longer relevant?

There are two types of class 2 cards: with constant bitrate and with high bit rate ad latency periods. The first is good, the second is not.

9. How fast is the GPS?

10 Hz

10. Do I always need to use the new external antenna? If not needed, is it suggested to run the SmartyCam without the antenna on open-top vehicles?

SmartyCam works without the external GPS. The precision is lower, but typically it does work properly, particularly in US, where the number of satellite receiver signals is always very high.

11. What additional current is needed to run the external antenna?

No additional current is necessary to run the external receiver: when SmartyCam detects it, it disables the internal one and turns the power off.

12. Is the SmartyCam antenna interchangeable with the GPS module? In other words, will the SmartyCam see the external GPS module (5 pin) if attached to a CAN hub?

Yes: if SmartyCam is connected to a net that already has a GPS module, it gets the information from that one.

13. Can the SmartyCam GPS be seen by my logger?

Yes, you can use the SmartyCam GPS like the normal GPS Module.  No need for a separate GPS Module.

14. Is there a GPS reception protocol for the SmartyCam, with and without an external module or EVO4?

No need, it is very simple: if SmartyCam is the only GPS receiver, it is seen by the master. If there is a second GPS, the SmartyCam one is disabled, and SmartyCam reads the external one.

15. Which is given priority if SmartyCam is connected to a Logger to which a GPS module is already connected?

In case there is an external GPS module, the external one has the priority and SmartyCam looks at it, not at the internal one. This is because, in some situations (close cars with metallic roof) SmartyCam can be installed in position where it is hard to get a good gps signal. You can also connect an external GPS to SmartyCam without the presence of a logger.

16. Can SmartyCam GPS send data (via CAN) to the logger? In other words, can SmartyCam substitute the separate GPS module?

Yes: SmartyCam GPS allows you to visualize GPS data on the video as well as to communicate this data to the connected logger (at 10 Hz). One of the next firmware releases will make it possible to record on the SD card the video AND the data.

17. How can I log GPS elevation data? We see it in SmartyCam, but never see it in RaceStudio2.

GPS elevation data is the least reliable information received from the satellites. This information is not available.
