Brake Fluids
One of the first upgrades to any car, street or race, should be the braking system. At the core of this system is the lifeblood, hydraulic brake fluid. Choosing the right brake fluid for you is a balance of budget and performance.
For the street enthusiast, autocrosser and occasional track driver we recommend ATE. ATE is available in both "Super Blue" and Type 200/Gold, the color change allowing you to know when your system has been flushed. Motul and AP are great choices for the more advanced track enthusiast looking for higher temperature coverage at a modest price. SRF is the ultimate fluid for the serious enthusiast and professional.
Brake Fluid is rated by its boiling point, wet and dry. The balance of these two numbers considers both your investment as well as the more intangible "feel". For all but the most avid track rat, consistency is key. Increased brake temperatures are often addressed with more expensive fluid, which can band-aid the problem, without correcting the cause. Rotor paint, IR thermometers and caliper strips can be used to verify and diagnose your problems and suspicions, as well as comparison with fellow drivers. Improved driving technique may be the best solution.
